NEW METHODS OF DAMAGE AND FAILURE ANALYSES OF STRUCTURAL PARTS

New Methods of Damage and Failure Analysis of Structural Parts – an international meeting of experts specializing in damage to materials and structures – will take place for the tenth time from 14–18 October this year.

Issues such as rapid low-energy fractures, fatigue processes, creep and corrosion are highly attractive research topics, as the direct technical application of research findings to structures in operation can prolong these structures’ lifespan. This field of study continues to grow in importance as a result of increasing demands on the reliability and fitness-for-service of structures – so any information that leads to an extension in a structure’s lifespan brings substantial economic benefits. The members of the Editorial Board – comprising both Japanese and Czech experts – are convinced that the findings presented in the publication will be practically applicable for both producers and operators of steel structures, pressurized systems and means of transportation.

This year, presentations at the workshop will address two additional topics – Construction and Building Materials, and Health Technologies. There will also be a special section for PhD students, offering a platform for them to present the results of their ongoing research; this represents an important opportunity to showcase their achievements to their peers.

Last autumn, work began on a major new research project entitled Materials and Technologies for Sustainable Development (MATUR), and the workshop will serve as a forum for presenting the first results of this research on an international stage. Besides the standard topics, presentations will also discuss new findings on hybrid concrete mixes, the properties of economically viable materials for energy generation, and materials designed for use in technologies with high environmental potential.

Most of the successful presentations will be published in an abridged form as Open Access texts. I am confident that you too will want to join us and enrich our workshop with your opinions and experiences. I look forward to meeting you.

In the field of education and science, the Faculty develops cooperation with Czech and foreign partners - universities, research institutes and industry. The Faculty has long-term cooperation with foreign universities in Japan, China, USA, Russia and EU countries. The faculty is one of the so-called stone university institutions, has a long and rich history. Some faculty workplaces were already part of the university when it was founded by František Josef I in 1849.

Ostrava is Czechia’s third largest city, a centre of industry and a university town in which students comprise approximately 14% of the population. It is a vibrant student city full of cultural and entertainment options. Ostrava is in an excellent location with superb public transport links meaning you can walk out of your door and travel to five European capitals within 4 hours for less than €20. Ostrava is also home to the Colours of Ostrava and Beats for Love music festivals, which host artists from around the world every summer.
