Sintered silicides as the future tool materials

Summary
Transition metal silicides and aluminides have been recently considered as high-temperature materials. This projects aims at the possible use of iron silicides with aluminide binder as tool materials, substituting cemented carbide or W- and Co-containing high-speed steel in order to minimize the use of critical raw materials. The ratio between the hard silicide and aluminide binder will be established to obtain the best combination of mechanical and tribological properties. Sintering conditions will be determined by the thermodynamic calculations and experiments in order to avoid or minimize the formation of unwanted brittle ternary phases.
