The laboratory is used for the determination of carbon and sulfur.
These elements are important, and carbon in particular cannot be determined by X-ray fluorescence. The maximum sample weight is 1 g; the minimum is 0.1 g. Both bulk and powdered samples can be measured in metallic as well as other inorganic and organic matrices. This is a destructive method, as the sample is combusted.
The determination of oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen in metallic materials complements spectroscopic analysis, which does not allow for the determination of these elements. In specific cases, however, it can also be used independently. The maximum sample weight is 1 g; the minimum is 0.2 g. Only compact, grindable samples can be measured. This is a destructive method, as the sample is combusted. The Eltra ONH 2000 instrument is currently out of service and scheduled for repair.
